Bessent's Yen Gamble: Treasury Secretary Dares Traders to Bet Against Him
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is making headlines for his bold claims about currency intervention. Speaking publicly, he declared, 'I am the house now' when it comes to the Japanese yen, implying that he has inside knowledge of the Bank of Japan's intentions.
Bessent's background in currency trading is well-known, particularly his involvement in George Soros's successful bet against the British pound in 1992. At the time, Bessent was a young trader who convinced Soros to short the pound, which ultimately led to the Bank of England abandoning its currency peg and a $1 billion profit for Soros.
Now, as Treasury Secretary, Bessent is using his expertise to make a similar bet against the yen. He claims that Beijing artificially holds down the yuan's value, making it likely that the Japanese central bank will intervene in the currency market.
Bessent's stance has sparked controversy, with some questioning whether he is taking on too much risk by intervening in the bond market. His former colleague and money manager Stanley Druckenmiller has publicly expressed concerns about Bessent's strategy, suggesting that it may not be effective.
