Bessent's Yen Rally Sparks Market Shift
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is taking on a new role as the US bond salesman, and it's paying off for Japan. Not only has he become the top US salesman, but he's also becoming the top Japan salesman. This change in fortunes has led to a notable rally in the yen, with the currency nearing 152 to the dollar, its strongest point since February.
Bessent's involvement in the foreign-exchange market in late July helped spark this rally, and his confidence in Japan's economy is evident in his statements. He's described himself as the 'house' that knows what the Bank of Japan will do, leaving investors to bet against him if they want.
Despite Bessent's bravado, he may be onto something. The yen has room to appreciate, having dropped to its weakest point in decades in July. However, further gains are likely to be modest, given that the currency is already up by around 4% this month alone.
The Bank of Japan's decision on Friday will be a critical factor in determining the yen's trajectory. While a 25-basis-point hike is now expected, Governor Kazuo Ueda may merely need to play along with a hawkish hint, given that Bessent has already shifted market psychology.
