Big Six Banks Face High-Stakes Earnings Reports Amid Uncertainty
Canada's six largest banks are about to report their quarterly earnings for Q3 2026, and all of them have exceeded expectations for four consecutive quarters. This means that analysts' consensus estimates have been revised upward across the board over the past year, with CIBC leading at +12.1% and RBC at +9.8%. The banks have seen significant price gains this year, ranging from 18.9% to 34.2%, but pulled back 5-7% last week.
The Bank of Canada's rate path is still uncertain, which makes net interest margins (NIM) a crucial aspect of these reports. Higher NIMs would indicate more earnings power for the banks. Additionally, investors will be watching credit loss provisions and capital markets revenue closely, as well as any hints of dividend increases.
The setup for these earnings reports is high-stakes, with every bank having exceeded expectations for four quarters in a row. However, the decelerating surprise trend at RBC and Bank of Nova Scotia suggests that analysts' expectations are catching up to reality. Therefore, exceptionalism will be rewarded over mere competence.
