Big Tech's AI Investments Spark Surge in US Corporate Bond Sales
The tech sector is driving a surge in US corporate bond sales as big names like Amazon and Alphabet aggressively invest in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Six of the biggest tech companies, Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, and Nvidia, have collectively issued around $244 billion in bonds globally by mid-July 2026. This figure already surpasses the previous annual average of $28 billion set between 2020 and 2024.
Nvidia's massive $25 billion bond sale in June 2026 was one of the largest single corporate debt offerings in recent memory, while Amazon followed with a multi-tranche offering targeting at least $25 billion in July 2026. These companies are spending heavily on data centers, custom AI chips, and power infrastructure to support increasingly expensive AI models.
The non-dollar share of hyperscaler bond issuance has doubled to 30% by 2026, with these companies issuing bonds denominated in euros, sterling, yen, Swiss francs, and Canadian dollars. Analysts project that total US investment-grade bond issuance will reach $2.46 trillion in 2026, up 11.8% from 2025, driven primarily by AI-related capital expenditure.
While credit spreads for hyperscaler bonds have widened due to the surge in supply, this is seen as a normal market function rather than a crisis signal. However, the sheer volume of issuance is testing absorption capacity in ways the tech sector has not seen before.
