The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has successfully completed a $1 million test of tokenized cross-border payments, marking one of the broadest real-world demonstrations of the technology to date. Project Agorá, led by the BIS, brought together 28 major banks to process live tokenized cross-border payments that settled in approximately 80 seconds.

The project's objective is to create a platform that integrates tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves into a unified system while leveraging existing payments infrastructure. The trial payments spanned six currencies, including the U.S. dollar, euro, British Pound, and Japanese Yen.

Project Agorá aims to address longstanding pain points in global financial services by providing an alternative to the current correspondent banking model, where payments often pass through multiple intermediaries in a process marked by delays, fees, and limited transparency.
