BIS Project Agorá Completes Real-Value Tokenization Payment Test
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has announced that Project Agorá has successfully completed a real-value tokenization payment test worth 800,000 Swiss Francs. The test involved participation from 28 banks and central banks, including the Bank of England, Bank of Japan, and Swiss National Bank. This project aims to explore the tokenization of central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits to support wholesale cross-border payments.
The test demonstrated near real-time settlement without directly interfacing with existing RTGS and core banking systems. It is a significant step towards reducing reconciliation friction and delays in cross-border payments, which currently rely on traditional correspondent banking models.
This development mirrors the transition of other central bank digital currency cross-border experiments from simulation to real value. The BIS notes that tokenization and programmable platforms will shift cross-border payments from multi-step reconciliation to atomic synchronous settlement, driving the flow of funds from fragmented ledgers to shared programmable infrastructure.
