Bitcoin Holds Steady as Japanese Yen Surges to Strongest Level Since February
Bitcoin's price held steady near $78,500 on September 8 as the Japanese yen reached its strongest level since February. The surge in the yen made borrowing it to buy foreign assets more expensive for investors, potentially prompting sales across their portfolios.
The Bank of Japan's upcoming meeting on September 17-18 is a key event that could impact the yen's value and, in turn, affect Bitcoin's price. A 25-basis-point increase in interest rates, as priced by Tokyo Tanshi with a 97% probability, could lead to further strengthening of the yen.
ETF inflows and a lower acquisition cost for recent holders provide some support for Bitcoin's price. However, if Japanese funding becomes more expensive, investors may reduce their risk-taking behavior, which could put pressure on Bitcoin's buyers to absorb supply.
The market is currently consolidating within the $77,200-$82,100 range, and a breakdown below this range could trigger faster derisking across portfolios. The balance of buying and selling remains unresolved, with some indicators suggesting that identifiable buying has not translated into uniformly strong demand across the market.
