Bitcoin Liquidity Put to Test by US Tax Deadline

The upcoming US tax deadline on Tuesday will test Bitcoin's liquidity as cash flows into the Treasury. This situation could tighten dollar funding and limit risk-taking before the Federal Reserve concludes its September 15-16 meeting.

Bank reserves, which support payments and funding, have improved since last week. The Fed's balance-sheet release showed that weekly-average bank reserves rose $96.779 billion to about $2.991 trillion in the week ended September 9. However, Treasury General Account balances fell $84.6 billion to $883.3 billion on a weekly-average basis.

The accounting mechanism behind tax payments is straightforward: taxes move balances from commercial banks' reserve accounts into the Treasury's account. This can affect short-term financing and repo markets where cash is borrowed against securities. A historical example of this mechanism occurred in September 2019, when a temporary reserve decline, Treasury settlements, and corporate tax dates combined with a spike in repo rates.

The impact on Bitcoin investors will be indirect, running through financing conditions and appetite for risk. Research by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) finds that stablecoin market capitalization declines after US monetary tightening, suggesting broader sensitivity to monetary conditions. However, this does not necessarily imply a measured Bitcoin response to the tax deadline.
