Bitcoin Performance Data Sways Crypto Investors, Study Reveals
A recent study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland reveals that exposing individuals to historical Bitcoin performance data significantly alters their cryptocurrency investment preferences and purchasing behavior.
The research, conducted by Michael Weber, Bernardo Candia, Olivier Coibion, and Yuriy Gorodnichenko, examined repeated survey responses from up to 25,000 American households during each survey cycle. A randomized trial in the second quarter of 2025 found that participants who viewed Bitcoin's prior 12-month gain of 14.3% increased their preferred cryptocurrency allocation by approximately 2 percentage points.
This represented a 47% increase relative to the control group's baseline desired allocation of 4.3%. Tangible purchasing activity confirmed the shift, with genuine cryptocurrency acquisitions increasing by roughly 2.5 percentage points among households exposed to Bitcoin performance metrics.
