Bitcoin Struggles Above $80,000 Amid Conflicting Market Forces
Bitcoin's price has been struggling to hold above $80,000 due to conflicting market forces. The cryptocurrency had risen to near $81,000 on Friday but dropped back below $80,000 after stronger US employment data revived expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike.
The August US payrolls report showed the economy added 162,000 jobs, almost three times the 56,000 economists had expected. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, while average hourly earnings rose 0.3% from July and 3.1% from a year earlier.
Bitcoin's price has been influenced by both ETF demand and expectations for US monetary policy. Spot ETF buying helped BTC break the $80,000 level, but the payroll surprise brought interest-rate risk back into focus before the Fed's September 15-16 meeting.
The next major US inflation reading is due on September 11, which will be closely watched by investors as it may impact the Federal Reserve's decision. The CLARITY Act procedural Senate vote is also expected to provide a catalyst for crypto regulation on September 15.
