Bitcoin's Price Hangs in Balance as Key Economic Events Loom
Bitcoin is currently stuck below $80,000 due to rising interest rates. The cryptocurrency's price has been stagnant since August after climbing roughly 25% from $63,000 to $82,000. A strong jobs report in August led to a rise in the probability of a rate hike, which is now at 60.5%, up from 34.8%. This increase in interest rates puts pressure on risk assets like Bitcoin.
The next five days are crucial for Bitcoin's price movement. On September 10, the Producer Price Index (PPI) will be released, which measures wholesale inflation and sets the tone for the Consumer Price Index (CPI). A hot PPI reading could lead to a hotter CPI on September 11, increasing the likelihood of a rate hike.
On September 15, the CLARITY Act, a comprehensive crypto regulatory bill, will have its cloture vote in the Senate. If passed, it would establish clear rules for cryptocurrency classification and regulation, potentially boosting the entire crypto sector. However, failure to pass would maintain regulatory ambiguity.
The Federal Reserve's rate decision on September 16 is also crucial. A rate hike could increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin, while a hold or dovish guidance would relieve pressure on risk assets.
