'Black Money' Scammers Busted at Bangkok Luxury Car Event

Bangkok police have dismantled an international 'Black Money Scam' operation after undercover officers posing as wealthy luxury car buyers caught two Liberian suspects attempting to demonstrate a classic fraud that falsely promises to turn blank paper into genuine US dollar banknotes.

The operation was led by Metropolitan Police investigators under the direction of Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Maj. Gen. Theeradej Thamsuthee on August 1.

The suspects claimed they possessed US$6 million (approximately 200 million baht) in cash that had supposedly been seized by customs authorities and asked the undercover officers to invest 150,000 baht as a bribe to release the money, promising a 40 percent share of the fortune.

To convince the victims, the suspects arranged a live demonstration of their so-called 'chemical process,' claiming they could transform blank sheets of paper into genuine US$100 banknotes using a special solution. Police allowed the demonstration to proceed before revealing their identities and arresting the suspects on the spot.
