BlackRock Tokenizes Money Market Funds in European Expansion
BlackRock is expanding its tokenized funds in Europe by launching digital versions of several money market funds. The move marks a significant step towards mainstream adoption of blockchain technology in finance.
The new offerings will include sterling, euro, and US-dollar-denominated share classes, each represented as digital tokens equivalent to shares in the underlying funds. This allows for seamless, 24/7 transfers between approved digital wallets.
Tokenization enables traditional financial assets to be issued digitally, simplifying transactions and settlement processes. According to rwa.xyz, the market value of tokenized assets has surged to approximately $37 billion.
BlackRock's decision follows a series of transactions involving tokenized securities participated in by major financial firms, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and BlackRock itself. The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation was also involved in these transactions.
