BoE Decision Leaves GBP Without Significant Policy Support
The Bank of England's decision to keep interest rates unchanged has left the British Pound without significant policy support, according to Commerzbank.
Michael Pfister, a senior analyst at Commerzbank, notes that while the BoE did not signal any rate hikes, its stance is unlikely to boost the pound in the short term.
The BoE's decision was widely expected, but the close 6-3 vote did surprise some observers. However, Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that the central bank is not edging towards a hike, and some policymakers noted that rate cuts could return if the Middle East conflict ends.
This view confirms Commerzbank's long-held position that the BoE will delay hikes as long as possible and quickly revert to cuts if necessary. As Pfister points out, there is still scope for further adjustments in interest rates, which may disappoint those relying on monetary policy to support the pound.
