BoE Expected to Hold Interest Rates Amid Ongoing Middle Eastern Uncertainty
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is set to announce its latest interest rate decision at 12:00 BST, with a hold on rates widely expected. The MPC uses the base rate as its primary tool to maintain inflation within its target range of 2%. According to the latest official figures, UK inflation was 2.6% in the year to June, down slightly from the previous month but still above its target.
The main driver behind this inflation is a 13% rise in domestic energy prices, which will likely push inflation up further in July. This increase is attributed to the impact of the Iran war on wholesale energy prices, and ongoing conflict in the Gulf region has added to the uncertainty surrounding future price movements.
Analysts expect interest rates to remain unchanged for now, with some predicting a potential rise in the near future. Katie Horne from savings platform Flagstone stated that 'a new government finding its feet, and the situation in the Middle East becoming increasingly uncertain, mean that a hold on [the] base rate decision would be a welcome dose of stability.'
In essence, this holds true as people are seeking relief from the uncertainty over the past year, even if it's just temporary.
