BoE Faces Crunch Interest Rate Vote as Economists Predict Hold
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is set to make its latest interest rate decision this week, with economists predicting a hold on the current rate. The committee's nine members have varying opinions on whether to raise or keep the current rate of 3.75%. Huw Pill, Chief Economist and MPC member, supports a rate increase, stating that 'We cannot wait for uncertainties to resolve themselves before acting.'
All 65 economists polled by Reuters this month expect the Bank to hold the rate, with nearly 90% predicting no change throughout the year. Eight economists believe rates will rise to 4%, while swap rates have reached a three-year high due to international bond market volatility.
Mortgage rates have increased in recent days as a result of this uncertainty, which may impact the housing market. The number of mortgage approvals decreased by 2,100 in July compared to the previous month, according to the Bank's latest data.
