The Bank of England is set to receive a new objective from the British government to support innovation in payment systems and digital money, including stablecoins. This secondary objective will be in addition to maintaining financial stability as the central bank's primary responsibility.

The Treasury announced on Wednesday that the proposed objective aims to ensure that regulation keeps pace with changes in payments technology. Stablecoins are cryptocurrency tokens designed to hold a steady value and have been growing rapidly, particularly under favorable policies drawn up by the Trump administration.

Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden welcomed the announcement, while City Minister Lucy Rigby said developments in digital payments technology could transform financial markets. The bank will be required to report annually to parliament on its progress towards this objective.
