BoE Holds Rates, Sterling Finds Support in Carry Trade
The British pound held steady on Thursday after the Bank of England (BoE) kept interest rates unchanged at 5.25%. The decision was widely anticipated, but the accompanying statement and vote split provided fresh cues for traders.
ING analysts attributed Sterling's strength to its carry appeal in the current global rate environment. According to ING, investors borrow in low-yielding currencies to invest in higher-yielding ones, which remains supportive for GBP as other major central banks, like the Federal Reserve, are expected to cut rates later this year.
The interest rate differential between the UK and other economies continues to favor the pound. With the BoE holding rates while the European Central Bank and the Fed are anticipated to begin cutting, the yield advantage for Sterling-denominated assets becomes more attractive. ING's analysis suggests that as long as the BoE maintains its higher-for-longer stance, GBP is likely to find support from yield-seeking investors.
