BOE Keeps Interest Rates Steady Amid Inflation Concerns
The Bank of England has decided to keep interest rates at 3.75 per cent for now, but policymakers are warning that 'policy strategy could change' as the year goes on.
This decision was made in a split 6-3 vote by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), with economist Catherine Mann joining external member Megan Greene and Bank chief economist Huw Pill in backing a 25 basis point increase.
The MPC believes that recent inflation figures showing prices at 2.6 per cent have given them some breathing space, allowing them to maintain their current monetary policy stance.
However, officials are concerned about the potential impact of renewed conflict in the Middle East on energy prices and inflation, which could lead to further interest rate hikes.
Bank Governor Andrew Bailey stated that it's 'too early' to conclude that the UK is heading towards a prolonged period of high inflation, but emphasized the need to bring consumer prices back to a stable growth rate of 2 per cent.
