BoE Keeps Key Rate Steady Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict
The Bank of England (BoE) kept its key interest rate at 3.75% for the fifth time this year, as policymakers assessed the impact of renewed fighting in Iran on inflation.
In a 6-3 vote, the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee decided to maintain the rate at 3.75%, matching economist expectations.
The decision comes after a bigger-than-expected drop in the inflation rate last month, which gave policymakers 'breathing space' to consider the fallout from the conflict in Iran.
However, three committee members disagreed, arguing that the potential inflationary effect of the recent surge in energy prices was too great to ignore. They voted to raise rates by a quarter point to 4%.
Committee member Huw Pill expressed concerns about 'catch-up dynamics' in wage and price setting, which could lead to lasting and persistent inflation.
