BOE Keeps Rates Steady Amid Global Uncertainty
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted to keep interest rates at 3.75% after a split 6-3 decision on Thursday, July 30.
Bank Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that the MPC was not considering a rate hike, stating 'Please do not leave this room thinking that the Bank of England is edging towards a hike... We took a decision today to leave bank rate unchanged, and that is the relevant conclusion.'
Bailey also highlighted the need for inflation to return to the 2% target, saying 'It is our job to ensure that inflation gets back to the 2% target and stays there.' He noted that if the conflict in the Middle East persists, the MPC may need to tighten policy to counter inflationary pressures.
Several MPC members expressed differing views on whether rates should be increased or kept steady. External member Swati Dhingra suggested waiting for a clearer read on the energy shock before making a decision, while external member Megan Greene advocated for a proactive hike in Bank Rate to reduce the probability of second-round effects.
