BoE Keeps Rates Unchanged Amid Global Uncertainties
The Bank of England left interest rates unchanged at 3.75% on Thursday after a split 6-3 vote by its Monetary Policy Committee. The decision marks a cautious approach to managing inflation, given ongoing global uncertainties and energy price pressures.
Bank Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that there is no indication the BoE is considering an interest rate hike in the near future. 'Please do not leave this room thinking that the Bank of England is edging towards a hike,' he said.
Bailey also reiterated the central bank's commitment to keeping inflation at 2%. However, he acknowledged the risk of second-round effects from higher energy prices and geopolitical tensions.
Deputy Governor Clare Lombardelli expressed her support for maintaining the current rate, citing 'more evidence on disinflation' since the conflict in the Middle East began. In contrast, external MPC member Megan Greene voted to raise interest rates to 4%, suggesting a proactive hike could reduce the likelihood of second-round effects.
