BoE Maintains Hawkish Tone Amid Softened Inflation Projections

The Bank of England (BoE) maintained its Bank Rate at 3.75% in August, with a 6-3 split vote among policymakers. Despite slightly more hawkish rhetoric, the BoE continues to find comfort in existing financial tightening. The July Monetary Policy Report shows a more benign inflation and growth outlook, but risks remain skewed to the upside.

TD Securities strategists highlight that the softening of inflation projections and continued evidence of underlying disinflation give them confidence in their call for Bank Rate to remain unchanged in September. However, they caution that a material jump in energy prices or broader commodity markets could alter this stance.

The BoE's messaging became slightly more hawkish in July, with the Committee expressing concern about inflation risks being tilted to the upside and policy needing to react before second-round effects are fully evident. The dominant message remains that existing financial tightening provides sufficient restraint for now, but the MPC waits for clearer evidence on inflation persistence.
