BOE Set to Hold Interest Rates as Middle East Uncertainty Lingers
The Bank of England is expected to maintain its current interest rate of 3.75% at its next meeting on July 30, despite rising uncertainty in the Middle East and potential inflationary pressures.
Economists from Oxford Economics and Nomura predict a seven-to-two vote in favor of holding the current rate, citing a recent decline in UK consumer price index inflation to a 15-month low of 2.6% in June.
The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee will also unveil fresh economic forecasts at the meeting, which is likely to be influenced by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and its impact on oil prices.
Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, believes that oil prices will 'largely' determine the path of interest rates for the next year, with a September rate hike becoming more likely if prices remain above $100 per barrel over the summer.
