BoE Slows Bond Portfolio Reduction Pace Amid Market Stability Concerns

The Bank of England is expected to slow down its bond portfolio reduction as it continues its quantitative tightening program. Market participants anticipate that the BoE will reduce its bond holdings by around £50 billion in the year ending September 2027, which is slower than the current annual target of around £70 billion.

This move reflects concerns about placing additional pressure on government borrowing costs and bond market liquidity. The BoE has been reducing its bond holdings since 2022 after years of asset purchases aimed at supporting the economy.

The central bank accumulated around £875 billion of government bonds between 2009 and 2021 through quantitative easing programs designed to support economic growth and stabilize markets. Now, it is reversing that expansion by allowing bonds to mature and selling assets.

The BoE has emphasized that the reduction process should remain gradual and predictable to limit disruption in financial markets. A slower pace could help ease pressure on bond markets while allowing the central bank to continue normalizing its balance sheet.
