Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has sounded the alarm on the risks posed by advanced artificial intelligence (AI), warning that they extend far beyond the concerns surrounding stretched valuations in the tech sector.

In a letter to G20 finance ministers and central bank governors, Bailey highlighted the growing threat posed by AI, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, infrastructure concentration, and broader financial stability.

Bailey identified cyber risk as 'the most immediate concern,' warning that advanced AI could 'materially alter the speed, scale and economics of cyber risk' and undermine confidence across markets.

The Governor also pointed to the heavy reliance on a small number of third-party technology providers in the financial sector, which he said poses a significant risk of disruption spreading across multiple institutions if one of these providers is compromised.
