BoE's Bailey Cites Structural Challenges for Rising Government Debt
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey pointed to structural challenges such as weak productivity and demographic shifts as drivers behind rising government debt in advanced economies. He noted that aging populations, a desire for higher defense spending, and shocks like COVID-19 are contributing factors.
Bailey said these pressures are relevant when considering bond market dynamics, specifically citing recent interest rate demands on French government debt compared to cosmetics company L'Oréal.
The yields of government bonds have surged in recent months, reaching their highest levels in almost 20 years earlier this week. Long-dated yields hit a 25-year high in 1998.
