BOE's Bailey Downplays Inflation Fears Amid Energy Price Surge
Bank of England (BOE) Governor Andrew Bailey downplayed the impact of rising energy prices on inflation, stating that secondary effects are 'quite contained.' The remarks were made at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium in Wyoming.
The BOE has been monitoring the situation closely as Brent crude futures closed at $84 per barrel on July 28, and UK natural gas futures traded at 136 pence per therm, both above pre-conflict levels.
Bailey emphasized that workers' diminished bargaining power for wage increases is helping to break the chain of price escalation. This has led him to conclude that there are 'few signs at present' that the energy price surge is generating serious long-term inflationary pressure in the UK.
