BOJ Board Members Expect Inflation Boost Later This Year
The Bank of Japan's June meeting minutes revealed that some board members expect consumer inflation to increase significantly in the latter half of this year. This is due to companies planning price hikes for a wide range of goods, according to the minutes released on August 5.
Two out of eight board members advocated for faster interest rate hikes to push the BOJ's policy rate closer to neutral levels, which would have a positive impact on the economy. The BOJ had raised interest rates to 1% in June, a 31-year high, due to rising fuel costs from the Middle East conflict and inflationary pressures.
The absence of Governor Kazuo Ueda from the meeting was noted, as he had been hospitalized at the time. Despite this, the board members' discussions highlighted ongoing concerns about inflation and the need for monetary policy adjustments.
