BoJ Cautious Stance Keeps Yen Intervention Risks Elevated

Japanese Yen intervention risks remain elevated as markets weigh the potential for official action against persistent interest rate differentials and the Bank of Japan's (BoJ) cautious policy stance.

MUFG analysts have highlighted the ongoing risks, noting that the Ministry of Finance has previously signaled readiness to act against excessive volatility. The current market conditions could trigger such measures, particularly as the USD/JPY pair trades at levels historically prompting official attention.

However, MUFG also notes that intervention alone may not provide lasting support unless accompanied by a shift in BoJ policy. The BoJ's ultra-loose monetary policy keeps interest rates low, widening the yield gap with the US and weakening the yen.
