BOJ Considers Early Rate Hike Amid Inflation Risks

The Bank of Japan is considering raising its key interest rate as early as September 2026 amid growing inflation risks. According to three sources familiar with internal discussions, the regulator is weighing a move away from its current practice of roughly two rate hikes per year.

The decision comes as Japan's economy faces increased price pressures due to various factors, including the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East and strong global demand for artificial intelligence technologies. The Japanese currency has weakened, which could continue to raise import costs and support price growth across a broad range of goods.

The Bank of Japan is paying close attention to inflation expectations, which are approaching 2% or have already exceeded that level according to surveys among households, companies, and economists. In July, Japan's annual wholesale inflation remained near three-year highs, increasing the risk that businesses will more actively pass rising costs on to end consumers.
