BOJ Data Suggests Interest Rate Hike Looming for Japan Amid Broadening Price Pressures
Japan's wholesale inflation continued its upward trend in July, with the annual producer price index rising 7.2% from a year earlier. This increase follows a revised 7.3% gain in June and comes despite market forecasts for a 7.4% rise.
The data was released by the Bank of Japan on Thursday, highlighting broadening price pressures in the country. On a month-on-month basis, the index edged up 0.1% in July, after a revised 0.5% increase in June.
The news reinforces market expectations of an interest rate hike in September, as policymakers continue to grapple with inflation risks. Some BOJ policymakers have called for speeding up the pace of rate hikes, which would further tighten monetary policy in Japan.
