BOJ Decision May Mark Turning Point for Yen as Markets Anticipate Disappointment
The yen's recent surge may be facing its moment of truth as markets await the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) policy decision on Friday. Analysts warn that a disappointing outcome could lead to a sharp reversal in the currency's value.
A sudden shift towards hawkish rhetoric from the BOJ at the start of September triggered a 5% surge in the yen against the dollar, with some investors betting on rate hikes to reach above 2% by next year. However, experts say this could be too optimistic and that the BOJ may not be able to outdo market expectations.
Masafumi Yamamoto, chief currency strategist at Mizuho Securities in Tokyo, stated, 'Even if the BOJ hikes this time, it will be hard for the BOJ to be more hawkish than what the market expects.' He also pointed out that a ramp-up in bets for Federal Reserve tightening could bolster the dollar against the yen.
Analysts warn that the market is pricing in too much and that above 2% for the terminal rate would damage the Japanese economy. They also predict a potential retreat towards 157 yen per dollar if the BOJ's decision disappoints.
