BoJ Decision Sparks Concern Over JPY Credibility and Intervention Dynamics
Japanese Yen's policy credibility and intervention dynamics have been under scrutiny after the Bank of Japan (BoJ) decision last week. According to Geoff Yu from BNY, the JPY entered the BoJ decision with weak flow momentum and lighter positioning. Despite investors remaining net long JPY and net short USD/JPY, concerns over fiscal issues and lack of policy assertiveness have undermined confidence in the currency.
BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized that the central bank could speed up rate hikes if monetary conditions remain too accommodative. He noted that currency volatility is increasingly affecting inflation, as the yen's weakness has raised upside price risks to 2% target. USD/JPY remained better bid, while spot purchases were inconsistent and cash flows turned sharply negative.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the Japanese yen looks undervalued and should strengthen further. However, excessive volatility in the currency is not healthy. If stronger intervention and clearer BoJ guidance materialize, it could quickly restore credibility and trigger a mean-reversion rally in JPY assets.
