BOJ Deputy Governor Calls for Timely Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Risks
BOJ Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino emphasized the need for timely interest rate hikes to address inflation risks, aligning with market expectations of a near-term increase in borrowing costs. In a speech and news conference on Thursday, Himino highlighted mounting inflationary pressures caused by rising fuel costs from the Middle East conflict, robust global AI demand, and high import prices from a weak yen.
He noted that Japan has entered a phase where the BOJ must consider the possibility of underlying inflation exceeding its 2% target. If this occurs, it could have an adverse impact on the economy, prompting the need for more attention to upside risks to prices. Himino stressed the importance of balancing the need for timely action with gathering sufficient information to inform policy decisions.
Market participants are closely watching the BOJ's next move, with some analysts predicting a rate hike as soon as September and potentially more aggressive increases thereafter. Shotaro Mori, senior economist at SBI Shinsei Bank, noted that Himino didn't rule out the chance of a September rate hike and was generally hawkish as expected.
Himino countered concerns that further rate hikes could hurt the fragile economy, arguing that adjusting financial conditions would help distribute assets more efficiently to investment with growth potential. He emphasized the need for the BOJ to focus on stabilizing price growth around 2%, rather than prioritizing other economic goals.
