BOJ Deputy Hints at Rate Hike as Inflation Risks Grow
BOJ Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino left the door open for a potential interest rate hike in September. Speaking to local business leaders in Saitama, north of Tokyo, Himino emphasized the need to pay attention to upside risks to prices, particularly if underlying inflation deviates above the Bank of Japan's 2% price stability target.
Himino noted that an upward deviation in inflation would have a negative impact on the economy. He encouraged 'in-depth deliberations' at each monetary policy meeting with this perspective in mind. This statement suggests that the BOJ may be considering a rate increase next month, aligning with growing market expectations.
Himino's comments come as the Japanese economy faces rising inflation concerns. The Bank of Japan has maintained its ultra-loose monetary policy for years, keeping interest rates at -0.1%. However, with inflation creeping up, there is pressure to reassess the BOJ's stance and potentially tighten monetary conditions.
