BOJ Eyes 25bp Rate Hike, Sparking Speculation on Future Interest Rate Path
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is increasingly likely to raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points at its monetary policy meeting next week. If this happens, the key rate would reach 1.25%, marking its highest level since 1995.
This would be the second rate increase this year, following one in June, making it a crucial meeting to gauge whether Japan's monetary policy is shifting from gradual normalization to a more definitive tightening phase.
The recent sustained increases in Japan's consumer prices are bringing inflation closer to the BOJ's 2% target. Producer prices also saw their largest increase in three and a half years in August, driven by rising energy costs and increased corporate expenses due to the weaker yen.
