BOJ Faces Hawkish Calls for Faster Rate Hikes Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
Bank of Japan (BOJ) hawkish board member Hajime Takata emphasized the need for the central bank to conduct interest rate hikes 'nimbly' after assessing domestic financial conditions and international developments. In a speech, Takata noted that the BOJ should shift its stance from encouraging underlying inflation rises and demonstrate determination to prevent upward price deviations.
Takata was the sole dissenter in July when the BOJ kept short-term interest rates steady at 1% and called for a rate hike to 1.25%. The BOJ's current policy stance is largely unchanged since July, according to Governor Ueda. Ueda said that data following the July meeting has been consistent with projections.
Ueda highlighted the impact of the Middle East conflict, AI demand, and foreign exchange (FX) on the economy and prices in guiding policy decisions. The BOJ will assess cumulative economic impacts from five rate hikes and debate appropriate policy at its next meeting.
