BOJ Faces Pressure as Japan's Core Inflation Rises Despite Producer Price Jump
Japan's core consumer inflation rate rose to 1.6% in June, marking a slight increase from May's 1.4%, according to newly released government data. This rate is still below the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) target of 2%, which it has missed for five consecutive months.
The core consumer price index excludes volatile fresh food prices and matches analyst forecasts. In contrast, headline inflation reached 1.7%, while an alternative measure that removes both fresh food and energy costs also registered at 1.7%, the lowest in nearly four years.
Analysts attribute part of this rise to last year's government fuel subsidies, which created a base effect. However, they also point out that food prices eased due to declining rice prices. Producer price index jumped 7.1% in June, the fastest pace since March 2023.
