BOJ Hawkish Tone Stokes Crypto Market Uncertainty
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has kept its policy rate at 1% after its July meeting, opting to pause after hiking rates by 25 basis points in June. This decision may seem unsurprising given that markets had priced it in with over 95% probability.
However, the BOJ's messaging is decidedly hawkish, as it upgrades growth projections and signals that additional rate increases remain on the table. The central bank attributes this hawkish tilt to a combination of inflationary pressures, including geopolitical tensions driving up energy prices, a weak yen making imports more expensive, and strong global demand.
The BOJ's monetary policy decisions have an unexpected connection to crypto market volatility, particularly through the yen carry trade. Investors borrow in low-interest-rate currencies like the yen and invest in higher-yielding assets, including risk assets like Bitcoin. When the BOJ raises rates, these positions become more expensive to maintain, leading traders to unwind them by selling risk assets.
The June rate hike from 0.75% to 1% had a notable impact on the crypto market, with Bitcoin experiencing corrections ranging from 18% to 32%. Crypto investors will be closely watching for any indication of when or if the BOJ plans to raise rates again and monitoring the USD/JPY exchange rate as a barometer of carry trade stress.
