BOJ Hawks Gain Momentum on Faster Rate Hikes

The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) policy meeting in July revealed a growing unease among policymakers about inflation persisting, leading to a more hawkish tone on potential rate hikes.

The BOJ maintained its policy rate at 1% after the June increase, but several board members expressed concerns that a weak yen is driving up import costs and that energy and broader price pressures could re-accelerate.

This hawkish shift means investors may need to reconsider their expectations for the BOJ's policy rate, which currently stands at a 31-year high. Most analysts surveyed by Reuters still predict the policy rate will reach 1.25% by year-end, but the path and messaging are becoming less predictable.
