BoJ Hawks Spark Yen Surge as USD/JPY Extends Decline
The Japanese Yen (JPY) surged on Thursday, strengthening by 2.07% against the US Dollar (USD), as investors welcomed a more hawkish tone from the Bank of Japan (BoJ). BoJ board member Hajime Takata's comments on Wednesday suggested that the central bank should adopt a more flexible approach to future interest rate hikes.
Takata argued that 2026 marks a structural change in the economic regime, driven by global growth and investments linked to artificial intelligence. He believes the BoJ should consider broader options beyond its traditional 25-basis-point increases every six months. These comments reinforce expectations of further monetary policy tightening in Japan, supporting the Japanese Yen.
The USD/JPY pair declined for a second consecutive day, trading around 155.40 on Thursday. The pair comes under strong selling pressure as investors price in an interest rate hike at the BoJ's September 16-17 meeting and remain concerned about potential intervention by Japanese authorities in the foreign exchange market.
