BOJ Hike Jitters Spark Bond Auction Anxiety in Tokyo
Japan is conducting a massive bond auction today, selling approximately 2.5 trillion yen ($16.28 billion) worth of 5-year government bonds. This sale coincides with traders' expectations of a near-certain Bank of Japan rate hike next week.
The timing is particularly awkward as the 5-year yield hit a record high of 2.31% last week, reflecting investors' growing concern about faster tightening. According to SMBC Nikko Securities, recent short-dated auctions have been soft even at higher yields due to uncertainty over how far the BOJ will go and where rates might peak.
If demand is weak in today's auction, dealers may need to offer slightly cheaper prices and higher yields, known as an 'auction concession,' to clear the bonds. This could lift borrowing costs across Japan's 2-7 year yield curve.
