BoJ Hikes on the Horizon: Takata Urges Flexible Rate Approach
Bank of Japan (BoJ) board member Hajime Takata has urged policymakers to adopt a flexible approach to rate hikes, warning that inflation is nearing its target and risks of overheating are rising.
Takata described 2026 as a 'regime change', implying that policy will no longer follow a fixed pace but adjust to domestic and global conditions. This stance contrasts with the BoJ's more dovish views in recent months, with some policymakers arguing for patience on rate hikes.
Although Takata had proposed lifting the benchmark rate to 1.25% at the July meeting, his suggestion was rejected in an 8-1 vote, leaving the rate at 1%. Meanwhile, Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized that policymakers will continue raising rates as long as financial conditions remain accommodative, weighing inflation risks against past moves.
