BOJ Board Member Takata Urges Nimble Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Pressures

Takata, a hawkish board member of the Bank of Japan (BOJ), has called for interest rate hikes to be conducted in a more flexible manner. Speaking at a news conference in Sapporo on September 2, Takata stated that the BOJ should respond to evolving economic and price conditions rather than adhering to a fixed pace or magnitude of rate hikes.

Takata noted that the global economy is recovering with support from fiscal measures and AI-led investment, while Japan is dealing with inflation pressures linked to the Middle East conflict. He declined to comment on what pace or magnitude of rate hikes would be appropriate, stating that such decisions should be made on a meeting-by-meeting basis.

The BOJ is set to raise interest rates as soon as its two-day policy meeting through September 18, with sources suggesting more aggressive hikes thereafter. Takata also cautioned about divergences between Japanese and overseas monetary policies triggering volatility in financial markets.
