BOJ Hints at Aggressive Rate Hikes as Hawkish Stance Looms
A Japanese central bank board member has hinted at more aggressive interest rate hikes to combat inflation. According to BoJ board member Hajime Takata, the central bank should respond swiftly to intensifying inflationary pressures rather than adhere to a fixed pace.
Analysts believe this could lead to a more hawkish stance by the Japanese central bank when it meets on September 17-18. State Street Investment Management's senior fixed income strategist Masahiko Loo noted that 'this feels less like a short squeeze and more like the market cautiously reassessing a more hawkish BOJ path.'
BNY strategists remain skeptical about sustained JPY appreciation through intervention alone, but stress this doesn't automatically imply further currency weakness. They caution that while policy remains reflationary, inflation is already higher than in the early Abenomics period and structural reform is less prominent.
