BOJ Holds Rates Steady Amid Yen Intervention and Economic Uncertainty
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) held its short-term policy interest rate steady at 1% on July 31, 2026, following a two-day Monetary Policy Meeting in Tokyo. This decision was widely anticipated by analysts and investors alike, but it comes amid a swirl of market interventions, currency volatility, and shifting economic forecasts.
The BOJ's policy board voted 8 to 1 in favor of keeping rates unchanged, with Governor Kazuo Ueda and seven other members backing the hold. Only Hajime Takata argued for a further 0.25 percentage point hike to 1.25%.
The bank is pausing to assess the impact of its historic rate increase on both inflation and the broader Japanese economy before taking any further steps.
