BOJ Holds Rates Steady, Signals Hawkish Stance Against Inflation

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is set to keep interest rates steady at its upcoming meeting, but signal its willingness to raise borrowing costs further. The move comes as inflation pressures continue to mount due to the weak yen and Middle East conflict.

Analysts expect the BOJ to maintain short-term interest rates at 1% after hiking in June. However, some analysts predict that hawkish board member Hajime Takata may dissent and propose a rate hike to 1.25%, which would signal a stronger stance against inflation risks.

The BOJ's quarterly outlook report is expected to revise up its growth forecast for fiscal 2026 due to receding fears of a severe hit from the Middle East conflict, while also cutting its inflation forecast due to subsidies and lower oil costs.

Despite this, economists believe that stronger growth would reinforce confidence in the economy's ability to withstand further policy normalization. Kei Fujimoto, senior economist at SuMi Trust, predicts that the BOJ will raise rates roughly once every six months, but notes that accelerating import-price inflation may lead to a faster pace of tightening.
