BOJ July Meeting Moved Up, Sparking Market Speculation of Additional Rate Hike
The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) July 2027 policy meeting has been moved up to July 21-22, just before the terms of two hawkish board members expire on July 23. This timing allows them to participate in one final rate vote before leaving.
According to former BOJ official Nobuyasu Atago, meeting dates are typically determined by considering Governor Kazuo Ueda's schedule and Federal Reserve meetings. However, he believes the BOJ recognized that scheduling the meeting just before the two hawkish members' departure would trigger market speculation about an additional rate hike.
The BOJ has not explained the rationale behind the specific meeting date, but with inflationary pressure persisting in Japan and market bets on a faster tightening trajectory building, this timing is being imbued with greater policy significance.
