BOJ Keeps Benchmark Rate Steady Amid Rising Core Inflation Expectations
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has maintained its benchmark policy rate at 1 percent on July 31, 2026. The central bank's decision came after a two-day policy meeting where officials voted 8-1 to keep the rate steady.
Board member Hajime Takata was the sole dissenter, advocating for a hike to 1.25 percent. Despite this dissenting view, the BOJ remains committed to its monetary tightening stance, particularly in light of rising core inflation expectations.
The central bank forecasts that underlying core inflation will accelerate sharply from the second half of fiscal year 2026, driven by higher crude oil prices, wage gains passed on to consumers, and recent yen weakness. Core inflation has already reached 1.6 percent in July.
Market analysts emphasize the importance of central bank communications in predicting future monetary policy decisions and potential changes in upcoming meetings.
